Wild Roses | Identifying, Harvesting & Wildcrafting Roses
Though wild roses may not be as large and extravagant as the cultivated varieties we know and love today, there is something so enchanting about seeing a wild rose growing. Wild roses have been utilized by humans for food and medicine for thousands of years, and have been seen as symbols of love. In botanical terms, wild roses are referred to as "species roses." They are called species roses since they are wild roses that occur naturally. Most of the roses we see today have been selectively bred for large blooms with numerous petals. Species roses grow as they have from the beginning with no help from humans and are true wildflowers.

Where do you get the herb infused oil or how do you make it rather
I have two videos on how to make them on this channel. There are a lot of great online step by step blogs as well!
This is how I make most of mine nowadays and how I made the ones I used for this salve. ruclips.net/video/INykP25N2SQ/видео.htmlsi=-Ax_QJ_JwvvDqSUu
Hi can I use avocado oil or grape seeds oil?
Absolutely!
Such a great instructional video, thank you! Just a note: In AZ, we have what could be a potential poisonous look alike, although not perfect, would be Lantana, aka "Lantana camara", which is highly toxic to humans & animals. The Prunella vulgaris plant sounds wonderful to look into, thank you again! 🌻
Thanks! I was just in Jamaica and saw tons of Lantana and was very curious about it. Beautiful plant but good to know it’s toxic.
That "cancer" of a plant has destroyed my land! If you wanna feed the planet...come and get it!
Honestly, after years of gardening and trying to let it grow in certain places I feel you. 🤣 I made this video over 4 years ago and since then it has taken over some areas. Still nice to know it has some uses though!
Yummy
beautiful video and sharing my frend ❤
Thank you! 🙏
Is it me or is 'foraging' making an exciting comeback ..🌱 🌾Love this info, ThankYou!🍃

What parts did you harvest? Do you use the floers and the leaves?
Yes! Both flowers and leaves 😊
Is this the same as dead nettle?
This question has come up a lot! They do look alike but they are different plants both in the mint family. Dead nettle tends to bloom in early Spring while self heal blooms from early to late summer.
anyone here know where best to source herbs and spices? mygreathanks and blessings
Mountain Rose Herbs is a great online source!
As a child we use to pick off these little flowers and suck out the sweet nectar.
90 days to bloom! Why so long?
Please can i use this same process to make fragrance oil? And get my Unique scent?
❤❤❤❤❤ thanks
I spotted some native roses yesterday when I was kayaking on Norton Reservoir, MA. It had 5 flower pedals and very pink (not ragosa) I uploaded the photo to iNaturalist but no ID yet.
Any luck with ID yet?!
@@SmallSeeds not yet……but the app suggested R. palustris, virginiana, carolina or nitida. I was kayaking on Long Pond, Plymouth today and spotted another rose in bloom……near water so assuming R. palustris.
Thank you
There is also an app called Flora Incognita this is a free application that keeps track of your observations
Your daughter's expression as she bit into the persimmon had me laughing out loud: "Augh, ugh! This is going to be vile... It's-- good actually. Huh." 😆
Haha yes! This is often the case when I introduce her to strange new fruits/edible plants. 😅 She’s a champ about it though.
Always, such great information
Someone gave me some elderberries to eat once and I got deathly ill from them. She claimed that she ate them all the time. I had no idea that they are supposed to be cooked prior to eating them. She said she ate them raw all the time. Always err on the side of caution.
Oh my goodness! 😲 I’m so sorry that happened to you.
Lovely presentation thank you for sharing...🥰 I'm admiring my elderberry flowers and looking forward to harvesting the berries... Much love and light to All ❤
Thank you! Much love ❤️
What’d you do with the mushy ones mom?
Such a thorough video! Thank you for putting so much effort into this and sharing!
Thank you! 🙏
I have a beautiful Elder in my garden. I make Elderflower Champagne and Elderberry Wine. Elderflowers in Tempura Batter id very tasty... I'm a British Pagan and this tree is very important to us. The birds love the berries too....
That’s lovely! I’ve made the fritters and they are very tasty. I still haven’t gotten around to champagne or wine making yet but hope to do so in the future. Thanks for sharing. 🌿💚🌱
What small nuts smell like spice. They fell off a tree in June on my deck? I can't find an answer??? Smells like cinnamon spice
Hmm where are you located? Do you live in a temperate climate? Also, what do they look like?! Sounds interesting!
I'm in zone 2b and it grows all over my area. I also cultivate it now for medicinal and herbal uses.
thankyou so much! nature really gets me into history. Please could you include scientific names? For the exact ID :)
Sambucus Canadensis for American Elder and Sambucus Nigra for the European Elders. Nowadays the American subspecies is also classified as Sambucus Nigra or Sambucus Nigra var. Canadensis. 😊
@@SmallSeeds thanks !
I like the look of a few herbs floating around in the oil. Can add a few whole herbs after draining out the ground ones? Also, can a spray be made with some of the oil or just herbs in vodka?
You could but you’d have to make sure to use it quicker as it may not be as shelf stable. Make sure they are completely covered in the oil as well. I haven’t tried making a spray with the oils so I couldn’t say for sure. I imagine the thickness of the oil would make it harder to spray.
Just came across your podcast for the first time. Awesome. We can hear you loud and clear, down here in Australia ✌️
Absolutely enjoyed this video!!
So glad to hear! 💚😊🌿
Yes, you can make a very nice wine with elderberries 🍷
I could write a short novella on these plants/berries, my memories and confusion. I do appreciate this thorough treatise.
Erbal ! Not Herbal. Again American English should be called Yank-lish.
I’m a bit confused. I do pronounce it as “erbal.” Most Americans do. Not that I think it matters but I’ve only ever heard British or Australian people pronounce it with the H.
@@SmallSeeds The word is Herbal, not Erbal. It does matter if you are attempting to speak English.
Sis, please translate the video into Indonesian so we can understand what you mean 🙏
Hello! Thank you for suggesting this. Do you mean for subtitles? I will look into doing this and try to get it going for all videos.
Nice, informing.
This was great info.Thank you! BTW unlike the European elderberry, the American elderberry (Canadensis strain) need not be cooked as doesn’t contain the high level of cyanide.
I will have to look into this more! Thanks!
Thanks for a great story full of information. The drawing at 1.25 is an Illustration made by danish artist, Henrik Arnold Hamilkar Sørensen, to H. C. Andersen's fairy tale about Hyldemor. In english the fairy tale is called The elderbush. Hyldemor is some places translated to 'old Granny' - but she can be compared to a Dryad. A dryad is a tree nymph or tree spirit in Greek mythology. Hyldemor means in directly translation: Elder-mother - as is said in the youtube.
Yes! I was very excited about the Elder Tree Mother fairytale when we got the book of H.C. Andersen’s fairytales. The illustrations are quite lovely. Thank you for sharing this!
@@SmallSeeds 💞
I made elderflower jam by ripping the flowers off the stems and boiling the flowers in water with sugar, lemon and vanilla, so that the flavor is drawn out. The flowers are then picked up and roughly blended so some structure remains. The flowers are returned to the elderflower juice in the pot with a little bit of aga-agar or pectin and boiled again, after which it is added to a clean jar. That was the short version
That sounds so good. 😊 I may have to try this soon. Thanks for sharing!
thank you
There is a link.
The Elderberries growing among the blackberries on the western side of my yard are at least 12 feet tall and growing. I didn`t harvest any last year because we had an extreme drought and the wildlife needed them way more than me. I helped the birds, reptiles and animals as much as possible during the drought and fed and watered the birds daily and made them a birdbath, put bowls of water in the yard for the bunny and possum, got the possum and raccoon a bag of dog food, and dug a puddle for the toads, snakes and frogs after frogs and toads put eggs in the bunny`s water bowl. I let the bunny eat from my garden because the heat made everything quit producing anyway. The toads hatched a ton of babies in the puddle.
Sounds like a little paradise for the wildlife. We always make sure to leave some for the birds too 😊
@@SmallSeeds I feed the birds every morning at early dawn and a Cardinal and Woodpecker always answer me from their roosts when I call them. It`s like a roll call.
What a life-changing comment to read.
Thanks! I'd set aside the scientist 'theories' and go with for example herbal knowledge from before the witch burning times, to get to the truth. The irish usually have a lot of knowledge about trees and beliefs as well, beside the healing power info. I've heard it's bad luck to take down an elderberry tree. And, they are often placed near entries of land, roads, for a reason. It's a sacred tree.
Thanks for sharing! It is a sacred tree indeed! I like to balance out the information with some science. I definitely get excited when a folk remedy, like elder, does have some science backing it.
@@SmallSeeds yes, but 'real' info gets twisted also more and more. You cannot trust wiki or 'official sources' because they'll tell more and more half truths. So, I rather trust the wisdom from past ages. Thanks!
For example, raw milk can cure an eye infection. (Just like breastfeeders put their own milk in their eye when you have an eye infection after giving birth). But... the opposite is being spread now. Sick!
Love the inspiration. I've been collecting rose petals and am excited the elderflowers will soon be blooming too and I can put together a lovely toner as well!! Thank you
I hope you enjoy the toner as much as I do! 🌿🌸💚
Very nice ❤herbal plant ❤❤❤❤
Although a lot of great info here if you already have an autoimmune disorder, *it will over-stimulate your immune system and cause a cytokine storm.*
We are at present fermenting the flowers for champagne soooo easy and take a small organza jewelry bag to cover berries since the small forest we live in shelters so many birds we want a few to enjoy as well lol … great video thank you for sharing
That sounds lovely! I’d love to try making that one day. Great idea for protecting the berries from birds too. Thanks!
